1. Ferdinand mentions to Miranda that he’s seen many women and always finds flaws. This would not be unlikely because princes were exposed
to many women at events such as balls, dinners, and ceremonies in order to find them a wife.

2. During this time period princes were very sheltered and protected in order to keep them from being hurt in anyway or taken so that the throne
would be left without an heir. In Ferdinand you can see his immaturity and his lack of experience in scenes like when he jumps off of the ship.

3. Ferdinand is a prince because Alonso is his father and he is the king of Naples. They believed in the divine right of kings which meant that anyone with family name inherited the throne. Ferdinand is next in line after his father to obtain the crown.
4. Since Ferdinand is so protected and sheltered he lacks basic survival skills which is why Alonso is so restless and worried about whether or not Ferdinand is alive.

5. Prospero treats Ferdinand as an equal and asks him to do chores like gathering wood. Ferdinand unsurprisingly is against this because he never has
done chores for himself but he ends up having to do it anyway.

6. Women in the 1600’s were often sold or married off as means of acquiring what the parents wanted. Whether it be for a mule or an ally as in the tempest Alonso marries off the daughter, Ferdinand’s sister, to an African. This was used against Alonso by Sebastian and Antonio along with the fact that they thought Ferdinand was dead.

7. Arial sings Ferdinand a song to persuade him that he was the only survivor of the storm and his father is dead. Since he is a sheltered prince,
Ferdinand believes him. He is also young and quick to trust anyone

8. To us in the story, Ferdinand and Miranda’s relationship seems fictitious because they just met. In reality the time period often called for arranged
marriages in which the bride and groom were setup according to class, by their parents and it wasn’t unusual to be strangers.

9. At the end of the play, Prospero says that Ferdinand and Miranda are to be married as soon as they return. This ensures the peace that has been his goal all along. The marriage would provide peace because it brings together the two enemies of the play and shows that Prospero completely forgives Alonso.

10. Prospero threatens Ferdinand with the promise of infertility, if he is to have premarital relations with his daughter. He does this because he is concerned that Ferdinand is used to having women throw themselves at him because he is royalty.

MONOLOG:
Act I: I was out in a dangerous storm. Frightened of where I would end up and where I’d go. I debated whether to abandon the ship if things became to dangerous but diving into the deep ocean waters would be an even worse idea and very good chance of drowning. I got to an island and I couldn’t find anyone. Not knowing where I was, something, a spirit or fairy of some sort has been leading me where to go through this deserted island. I was in search of anyone I could find and any food to keep my energy. I then found Prospero and Miranda. When I saw Miranda I was relieved that there was a women on the island about the same age as me. The father, Prospero, seemed to want to make sure I was right for his daughter and I would make him a believer. I told them I was the prince of Naples but Prospero accused me of lying. With Prospero being Miranda’s father I had to obey him if I wanted to marry her.
Act II: Miranda was a very beautiful girl and the only girl on the island. It was love at first sight. I knew I had to persuade her father that I was the prince of naples and I was worthy of his daughter. We had only been in front of each other for about an hour but I knew she was the one and the only one at the moment I knew I could be with. I didn’t know whether my father was dead so I couldn’t ask him for his advice so I decided to take it upon myself to fall in love with her and do whatever it took.
Act III: I took over Caliban’s duties and I carried wood for Prospero. I did these chores for Prospero to win over his daughter’s heart. I had to do these chores without any problems. I carried wood for awhile until Miranda came. Once she was with me she asked if she could carry the wood for me but I refused. I then rested for some time and talked to Miranda. She told me her name but seemed hesitant. I wondered why she seemed to not want to tell me much about herself but she did. We both told each other of our love for one another and then she proposed to me. I was overcome with happiness and that she had the same feelings. Now she could be the queen of naples when I became king.
Act IV: Prospero gave me and Miranda the blessing and we were married. Before this though he made me promise to him that I was not to take Miranda’s virgin knot before marriage. I quickly replied and promised him I wouldn’t. I knew if I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to marry her. Once we were married, Prospero started acting funny. At that moment I wanted Prospero as my Father and Miranda as my wife and we could live on the island together. I don’t think well ever make it home so this is the next best thing. Prospero then grew angry for some reason. I was afraid because I thought it was because of the marriage but then he went on to say he just needed to walk it off and that there was no big deal. Once he said this Miranda and I left him alone to work out his problems.
Act V: As Miranda and I were playing chess we heard some talking. From in front of the curtain we were behind of. It sounded like men talking to Prospero just as I was about to pull the curtain aside. Prospero opened it and there stood my father. He was astonished to see me and I was shocked to see him also. I had prayed he was alright and there he stood. He had acknowledge the fact that me and Miranda had became married and he had deep apologies to her about her being on the boat and sending them out to see. I was relieved even though my father was wrong for doing what he had done, he did apologize and peace would be made between my uncle and father. Then it was time for Miranda and I to head to naples where we would be married. I was happy to get off the island and to go home as soon as possible back to civilization and to keep my name as a prince.
